Anesthesia
Sun settling, behind
the gabled roof.
A hammock -
swinging sigh;
crickets chirp
past the line -
of citronella.
A notebook falls -
the thud,
absorbed by lush grass;
forgotten a -
critical,
minute,
detail . . .
A siren echoes;
cries a -
distant violence.
It ricochets -
off the shingles.
No threat,
to the picket -
fence line.
A deep ennui,
smolders, a thought:
three blocks -
to the bus line.
It winks out.
Smoke signals lost,
to the rise of -
nightfall.
